Obituary for Carmela Carlone

Carmela Carlone (nee Scarinzi) passed away peacefully on October 25, 2023, with her family by her side. She was 94 years old. She is now reunited with her loving husband, Costanzo, who passed away in August 2020. She is survived by her children, Carlo and Frank, and her dear daughter-in-law, Peggy. Carmela was the proud Nonna of her cherished grandchildren, David, Natalie (Michael), and Alexander (Nicole). She is also survived by her sister-in-law Angiolina Carlone, of Trenton, Michigan. She was predeceased by her loving sister Orsola and her husband Alberto Aloiso. One of eight Scarinzi children of Vitulano, BN, Italy, Carmela was also predeceased by her siblings in Italy: Francesco, Marietta, Adolfo, Arnaldo, Mario and Alfredo. She was also predeceased by her brother-in law Valerio Carlone and sister-in-law, Angela Dea Di Toro. She was “Zia Carmelina” to many nieces and nephews: Marilena Biasi (Bert), Marisa Simone, Suzy O’Laughlin, Lena Scipione (Anselm), Carlo Carlone (Tracy) and Frank Carlone. Cherished by her nieces and nephews in Italy: Antonio (Eufemia), Carmine (Maria), Anna Maria (Raimondo), Paolo, Maria Rita (Danilo), Luigi (Simona), Patrizia, Rosanna, Anna Maria and Angela.

Carmela was trained as a seamstress in Italy. She then married Costanzo in 1956 and moved to Windsor soon afterwards. Carmela’s sister, Orsola, later moved to Windsor and the two sisters and their families combined to form a close extended family. Carmela had a special bond with her nieces Marisa and Marilena and their children. Carmela’s sewing skills came in handy and allowed her to land a good job at the General Motors Trim Plant, eventually becoming an inspector. She made many good friends there. She maintained her seamstress skills by sewing dresses, shirts, and baby clothes. She turned scrap vinyl from GM into purses and gym bags. Her love of good fabrics and well-tailored attire stayed with her until her last days.
Her love for her children and grandchildren was expressed in many ways. One of the most tangible was her cooking. No one went hungry at Nonna’s house, and many lasagnas, meatballs, soups, and jars of homemade sauce were enjoyed by Frank and Peggy and the grandchildren. Her lasagna became a staple at the Taylor/Carlone Thanksgiving feasts.

Carmela’s family send heartfelt thanks for the loving care she received at the Village of St. Clair, especially in the Colchester neighbourhood, and special thanks to Amy and Jenna. The family also greatly appreciated the compassionate care Carmela received on the 5th Floor North at Windsor Regional Hospital, Ouellette Campus.

If you desire, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Windsor-Essex County would be appreciated.
