Obituary for Clement Garneau
Clement Joseph Francois Garneau was born January 29, 1945 in Beauport, Quebec to Gabriel Garneau (1899-1970) and Antoinette Gaumond (1908-2006). Today Beauport is an east suburb of Quebec City. He grew up on St.Lawrence river across Ile d’Orleans. In his teens he was rescued from drowning by his friend Andre Chasse to whom he was eternally grateful and told the story to new acquaintances.
Clement loved sports and played hockey, tennis, baseball, golf, bowling – any sports that were competitive and social. Golf would become his main pastime as he travelled to play at different greens. He moved to Ontario for work after school, and was loyal Quebecer, settling in French speaking areas, working at canning factory with his brother Alain, taking trips to California to work at berry picking farms always keeping close connection with Quebecois compatriots.
Clement was married to Diane Garneau at Cartier, Ontario on July 27, 1974. Even though marriage was short lived he kept his wedding pictures in a special envelope, a memory he would never let go, and gave pictures as keepsakes to friends.
Moving to Windsor to work for Chrysler he would make this city his home, his community. For more than 30 years he worked at Chrysler and retired, proudly carrying his gold card and numerous recognition awards, always driving Dodge vehicles.
Clement thought in numbers, loved numbers and would always take notes in numbers. He said that if he would go back in time, he would study accounting and be an accountant. In 1977 he took tax preparation course to do his taxes and to help friends. Numbers made sense to him, they were unchangeable and precise. Until his last days he played Sudoku, kept stats from College football, baseball, and other games. He played numbers hoping to win big. And numbers also brought him into a church. He attended prophecy seminars and was impressed with how numbers worked out in books of Daniel and Revelation. He loved history and seeing how 2300 days, 1260, 1335, 1290, 70 weeks and other prophecies overlapped and made unified picture was his proof of Biblical truths. On October 17, 1981 he joined the Windsor Seventh-day Adventist Church being baptised by pastor Larry Pumford. As everything Clement did, he poured his heart into the church, while not disconnecting from his secular friends he played golf with and socialized culturally. He was a man of many friends.
Clement dedicated himself to serve people. One example of his generosity was becoming a regular blood donor, given over 200 donations of blood, and he was a missionary for the cause, encouraging others to do the same. As the community was changing in the 1990s Clement invested himself into helping new arrivals from Rwanda and South Sudan. He took a special interest in Sudanese refugees, assisting them with rides, money, sponsoring children for school. For decades he was a magnanimous sponsor of the Kingsway College, and assisted families driving their children to Oshawa to attend the boarding school.
As his health declined he moved from McGregor in 2018 to Chez Nous retirement residence in Pointe aux Roches (Stoney Point) just because it was French, and had the Desjardines bank across the street. In 2019 he moved to La Chaumiere residence in Belle River. Special thanks to all the staff that patiently assisted him with his needs. There he was able to reconnect with his friend from younger days, Richard (Ricardo) Charron who was giving Bible Studies to the residents weekly.
Early morning of June 3, 2021 Clement passed away at the Erie Shores hospice in Leamington. He is deeply missed by sister Berengere Simard (Marcel), Alain Garneau, and predeceased by Edith Doyon, and surviving husband Jean. Survived by several nieces and nephews. Clement rests in the blessed hope of soon coming Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, awaiting the glorious resurrection.
