Obituary for Dominic Sgro

With saddened hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved uncle, Dominic Sgro, Jr. Most cherished husband of the late Maria (nee Romano). Predeceased by his parents Dominic and Caterina, his brother Paul and his sisters Rosa Maria Bevacqua and Caterina Colucci. Survived by his younger sister Assunta Fera. Dominic will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews.

He immigrated to Canada in 1947 from Calabria, Italy to be with his family. As with many others of that generation, he worked during the day and went to school at night to study English and business. Within a few years, he was able to open his own insurance and real estate business in Windsor. Dominic became a tutor and inspiration to many new immigrants, helping them gain a foothold in the community. Years later, he moved to Toronto where he met and married Maria, the love of his life. Together, he and Maria were very active in the Italian community, both socially and politically. In his retirement and after his wife’s passing, he returned to Windsor to be near his family. Many will remember his fun-loving spirit, his terrible jokes and pranks, and his irrepressible giggle. He had many passions, chief among them gardening, cooking, fishing and enthusiastically discussing politics! He will be greatly missed. Special thanks to the staff at Lifetimes and Extendicare.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society Windsor & Essex County would be appreciated. A private family service has been held. Arrangements entrusted to Families First, 3260 Dougall Avenue, South Windsor, 519-969-5841. Share memories, photos or make a donation at
