Obituary for Freida M. Steele

Passed away peacefully on September 22, 2019 at 90 years of age. Beloved wife of the late Eugene (2001). Loving mother of Janice Steele, Alan Steele, Dianne Steele-Beer, Cherie Steele-Sexton, Gina Hughes and Deborah Steele-Marshall. Cherished grandmother of Steele Hughes, Taylor Marshall, William Sexton III, Jefferson Marshall. Dear daughter of the late Alton & Evelyn Parker. Freida was raised in a home where she was taught to love God and reach out to others in her community. First Baptist Windsor was her life-long “home church” where she became the first female Deacon. In 1947 she chose Nursing as her life-path and received her training, the 3 year apprentice method, with the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Windsor. As a Registered Nurse, Freida worked all areas of the hospital, especially loving welcoming new lives into the world in the case room and the challenge of the emergency department and retired in 1992 as Director of Patient Registration, managing all hospital admissions. Freida also served on the North American Black Historical Museum Board (currently Amherstburg Freedom Museum) for 13 years and was an active volunteer with Windsor Goodfellows, Victim Services and numerous other organizations.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the First Baptist Church Windsor, Windsor Goodfellows or Windsor & Essex County Victim Services would be appreciated by the family.
