Obituary for Gilda Meconi

Passed away very peacefully, surrounded by the love of her life, her son, December 21, 2009, two weeks short of her 103rd birthday. Beloved wife of the late Clemente Meconi, whom she married in Windsor, Ontario and who died March 1, 1933. Gilda was born in Penn Argyle, Pennsylvania on January 5, 1907, lived in Vittorio Veneto, Italy, returning to Windsor, Ontario in 1925 to live with her sister and aunt. Her parents and siblings all have predeceased her, leaving only one son, Tullio Meconi, her daughter-in-law Rose Marie, a nephew and nieces in Italy, and nephews in Windsor. She developed and operated an import food company, G & T Meconi Importers Ltd. for 30 years until 1966. At the age of 59 years, she studied to be a Real Estate Agent and achieved first place honours in her tests for Ontario. She worked for the next 25 years with Dani Real Estate Ltd. and then Glisich Real Estate, retiring at the age of 87 years. She was active in the founding of St. Angela Merici Roman Catholic Church in 1937, and St. Angela Merici Senior Citizens Club. There is an old Italian saying, which applies "When an elder dies, a great library and archive burns to the ground". Whenever any person passes, it's the end of an era. Gilda was a very kind and generous soul who helped many people throughout her years. She always found something good to say about everyone. Gilda will be missed as she was loved, greatly. Special thanks to Extenidicare Southwood Lakes, especially Sherri, Brandi and Len for the past 4 years. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Scalabrini Charities for the Poor or the Italian Canadian Handi-Capable Association would be greatly appreciated by the family. Visiting Wednesday from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. Parish prayers Wednesday at 8 p.m. Funeral Thursday 8:45am from Families First Funeral Home & Tribute Centre (519-969-5841) 3260 Dougall Ave. to St. Angela Merici Church, 980 Louis Ave. for Mass at 9:30am.
