Obituary for Giovanna "Joanna" Canzoneri

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Mom, Nonna, Wife, Sister and Friend. Peacefully at Riverside Place, Giovanna (nee Piazza) on August 8th, 83 years. With strength and courage, she lived her life from humble beginnings to her final hour. Reunited with her loving husband Giuseppe (2015) with whom she shared 57 years. She is survived by her loving children - John (Clare) Mike (Barbara), and Josephine (Jon) Burns; by her amazing grandchildren - Joseph (Paula), Christopher (Alysha), Marco (Maggie), Daniel (Shelby), Matthew, Nicole and Carly. Nonna was blessed with many fur grandbabies and was excited at the thought of becoming a great grandmother for the first time this fall. She was the strength and glue in our fabric, and her legacy will carry on in all of us for years to come.

Born in Montallegro, Sicily – Giovanna was the only girl in the Piazza Family. Loving sister to Frank (Teresa), Emilio (Catherine), and pre-deceased by Giuseppe (Anna), Filippo (Maria), Aldo & Caterina, Antonino (Patricia), Roberto, and her in-laws Antonia & Vincenzo Bonadonna, Enza & Lillo Capitano, and Giovanni Canzoneri.

After immigrating to Canada in 1958, she started her family and life in Windsor and retired after 25 years of service to GM Trim. A member of several Italian and Women’s associations over the years, she doted on her family, loved sharing time with her “Pool Ladies” and always had a tray of cookies or sweets ready for any occasion.

Zia Giovanna will be missed by several nieces, nephews, and those she inherited as “Ma” or “Nonna” through the years. Her door was always open, fridge was always full, and the coffee pot was always ready. All you had to do was show up.

Profound thanks to Mom’s care team – Dr’s Milovic, Mikhail and Wilson over the years; Dr. Loebach and the entire Pelee Island team at Riverside Place – Nurses, PSW’s and all support staff for their kind and compassionate care of Mom these past 2 months. To Frances Samping for her loving care of Nonna, and to her granddaughters Nicole and Carly for their active support and care over these last several months – we are forever grateful for the love, kindness and compassion shown to Mom in her time of need.
