Shock and sadness overwhelmed us when we first heard of Hughies passing. Still hard to comprehend. But, as with all the best people that are in our lives, we are left with wonderful memories of a fun loving, big hearted man. We will always remember the generosity extended by Hugh and Cathy when they threw the bashes following the family golf tourneys, and especially being incredible hosts for our Mom and Dad’s 25th anniversary party. So kind! Every time Hughie comes to mind it will definitely bring a smile to our faces.
Love to you Cathy and family.

Words cannot express our sorrow at this time. Hughie was such a great person! His love of his family and friends was always evident. Cathy and Hughie were the greatest hosts for the Monforton clan after their golf outings and our 25th wedding anniversary party. How generous of you. Our prayers and love are with you Cathy, and your wonderful family.

Angie and I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to Cathy and the Walling family.
It is hard for me to recall how many years I have known Hughie and enjoyed his friendship. We first met when he began working in the US and then we both enjoyed being retired and able to golf on weekdays. Like everyone, It is even harder to realize we have lost such a great guy. The golf stories would fill a best selling book. Hughie was always Up! and ready to enjoy your company. He had some of the best schemes you could imagine. It goes without saying that he will be missed by everyone, family and friends. John and Angie KaiserFrom

I have known Rachel and her family what feels like my entire life. Cathy and Hugh were always so welcoming to me, even letting me always swim at their place when they weren't home! Much less when they got groceries for me to have their kitchen always stocked and ready for others. What a caring man Hugh showed everyone he was. I send my deepest thoughts and prayers as I cant be there Saturday but am sending my stand in, Dr King. Keep your chin up, to everyone who knew him, as this is how angels can see us smiling. Cathy and family, we were so extremely shocked and saddened to hear of Hughie's passing. Immediately, fond memories of times spent at your place on Villa Borghese came to mind. So many laughs and good times were possible because of yours and Hughie's incredible generosity and amazing knack for hosting.
Even when we gathered for more somber times, Hughie's smile was always something we could count on to lift our spirits and brighten the room. I personally counted on Hughie to always give me a big hug anytime we were together and he never disappointed.
We pray that all the wonderful memories you hold near and dear will bring comfort and will continue to fill your hearts with Hughie's love over the following days, weeks and beyond.
With love and prayers

My friend died suddenly in the arms of his beloved wife who desperately tried to revive him. This breaking news shattered the very soul of family and friends, not only from the image of that scene painted indelibly on our minds, but also from the memory of who he was and how implicitly he captured our hearts with his generosity and humour. His name was Hugh Walling.
My wife and I have known Hugh and Cathy for over fifty years, sharing many moments of our lives together: 'free fall' university days, weddings, babies, new homes, pool parties, graduations, family deaths and now we are left with his ultimate departure. As a couple, there was commitment to family and friends: organized trips, barbecues at the cottage, and dedication as the executor of a friend's family in dealing with that friend's last will. To say that we are heartbroken is the very least emotional upset. We are devastated and will be for a long time yet.
The only consolation we have are the signs of his presence all around us: a butterfly lands on your shoulder and it remains there even after you stare at it, a morning dove lands on your porch railing and it turns and watches you with no intention of fluttering away, a bloom suddenly appears in an unexpected place in your yard, a tree branch falls in front of you right at the moment when you have that person in mind, a person offers you his favourite drink, a man walks by wearing a bright coloured T-shirt. These are reminders, but are they? Somehow we take some of what Hugh was and transpose it to common occurrences which then become signs of his omnipresence. At the moment of his death, the skies were grey and a few hours later a full rainbow appeared giving hope to family and friends that he is still among us in the vitality of colour that he always sported. Hugh knew how to turn struggle into peace, sadness into laughter, and now temporary into eternal.
There are no words left that can replace visible and invisible tears, only a pledge to let his memory live on. Death is not proud today, not at all, because we have reminders of Hugh Walling everywhere that his spirit is alive, vibrant, pulsating and inspiring.
