Obituary for James (Jim) Lyon Scorgie

Jim died peacefully in his sleep on October 6, a month shy of his 100th birthday. He was predeceased by his loving wife Jane, son Scott, brother Allister and sister Elizabeth. He is survived by son Russell (Susan), grandsons Blair (Corinne) and Craig (Kelly), great grandchildren Adeline and Elliott Scorgie, and sister Phyllis Atkins. His last days were enjoyable and healthy.
Jim was born near Glasgow, Scotland of parents Alexander and Jessie (Lyon). He came to Canada as a very young child, growing up in Walkerville. After graduating from Walkerville Collegiate, he went to work at Hiram Walker. WW2 began and he joined the RCAF, becoming a tail gunner in a Lancaster bomber stationed in Yorkshire, England. He flew 30 missions before the war ended. He returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Jane Farrow.
Jim was the Director of Advertising for Hiram Walker Inc. for many years, until his retirement. He was also President of the Windsor Club and the Adcraft Club of Detroit. He served on the Board of Directors of the Windsor Public Library. For over 20 years, he was Executive Director of the Windsor Essex Community Foundation where, among other things, he raised funds for the major Windsor waterfront park redevelopment. He was also instrumental in initiating and raising money for the statue of Hiram Walker on Riverside Drive in old Walkerville.
He loved spending summers at the family cottage at Bruce Beach, on Lake Huron, south of Kincardine. He played third base, bare-foot and bare-handed, at the weekly softball game for many years.
Jim had a long and good life. He will be remembered and missed.
Cremation has taken place. If inclined, a suggested donation is to the James L. Scorgie Leadership Fund at the Windsor Essex Community Foundation:
