Obituary for Jeanne-Marie Habimana
Jeanne-Marie Habimana was born on April 16, 1943 in Cyangugu, Rwanda. In 1959 she fled to Burundi at the height of political and social unrest against tutsis. In 1964 she married Hezron Habimana with whom she formed a combined family of nine children. They moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in late 1965, where Hezron worked as an administrator with the Economic Commission for Africa. She studied the trade of tailoring and later worked part time as a tailor. In 1986 she moved to the United States where she nursed her husband until his passing away in May of 1990 due to cancer. In 1996 she migrated to Canada to join her sons William, Alexander, Hezron Jr.
Jeanne-Marie Habimana was dedicated to her family and lived a life of looking after her children and her husband. She was active in her local churches where she continually served in different positions.. In her spare time she learned to speak English and French. Her interests included creating art crafts and selling them. She was also active in prayer groups with her friends and often volunteered to help newcomers adapt to life in a new country.
Jeanne-Marie Habimana is survived by her children William Mugenzi, John Habimana, Hezron Habimana Jr. , Gloria Habimana and Gerard Habimana. Her grandchildren, Singiza, Irakoze, Naomi, Abigail, Ruba, Patrick, Addy, Audrey, Patricia, Christine, Johan & Hazel; her sisters Amunariya, Tatiana, Immaculée, brothers Théogene and Théobald, and a host of nieces and nephews, and friends. She is remembered by her close ones as living the life of servitude and sacrifice. She will be deeply missed by all who had the fortune of knowing her. May her soul rest in peace.
