Obituary for John Froese

It is with a heavy heart we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Johan Froese on December 7 at the age of 91 in Windsor. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn (nee Black), and a daughter, Carol (John Reilly). He was survived by daughter Elizabeth Taylor (John) and son Robert (Shannon) in addition to grand-children Sonia (Ronald), Jordan (Crystal), Darwin, and Orion, in addition to great grand-children Chance, Dallas, and Caiden.

Johan was born near Winkler in the rural area of Reinfeld, Manitoba. Following degrees from University of Manitoba and Queen’s University, he completed his doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of British Columbia in 1966. He joined the mathematics faculty at the University of Waterloo where he was a professor for 31 years.

Johan and Evelyn owned farms near Stratford for many years and loved growing fields of corn, beans, and grain. They were avid Stratford Festival Theatre supporters. Johan enjoyed many activities including the Mennonite Church, sports (he was an amateur boxer in his youth), woodworking (he built bat houses for the Restore), stained glass work, building electronic gadgets and engines, and computers (he was one of the first people with a home computer in 1981). He loved interacting with his (great) grand-children and taking pictures of them. One of Johan’s great loves was playing the piano. He played a concert at Queen’s University in the 50s and continued throughout life including playing at retirement homes in the last five years. Johan will be greatly missed by all. Private family arrangements.
