Obituary for John Walter "Jack" Cowie

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Mr. John Walter Cowie “Jack” on October 23, 2023, at the age of 86. Jack is reunited with his parents, brother and sisters in the place of peace. Jack is survived by his special friend Dr. Odette Mukarukunbo (of Kigali, Rawanda), his children Bruce Cowie, David Cowie (Lori), Sharon Mayea, Paul Hodgins (Suzie), and predeceased by his daughter Julie Harper (2022). Also survived by his grandchildren Regan, Jake, Jennifer and Anthony. His lifelong Apprentice George Rizok will be forever grateful for Jack’s friendship.

Jack was a proud member of RCL Branch 255 for 65 years, and a strong supporter of veterans. He was an accomplished dart player and the winner of numerous Legion tournaments. Jack worked at Ford Canada-Local 200 UNIFOR as a millwright for 37 years. On November 17, 1982, he changed his life and quit drinking, and joined (AA); he stayed sober for his remaining 41 years, and was a proud member of The Tecumseh Group (AA).

Thank you to all the staff, the canteen attendants, and the security guards, as well as all the PSW’s, cleaning staff and nurses on the Hickory Unit at Huron Lodge. A special thank you to Dr. O’Callaghan, and nurses Bill “Big Bill”, and Angela “Blondie”. Special thanks also to good friends, Miss Cathy and Richard Monaghan, whose visits cheered Jack up and warmed his heart.
