Obituary for John William Farkas

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, Dad, and Poppa. Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Mary Farkas. Loving husband of Margaret for 52 years. Loved by his daughters Amy (John) and Kristy and adored by his grandson James. Dear brother to the late Mary Jacobs (late Fred), Joseph Farkas (Lily) and Kathy Seaman (late Harry) and loving brother-in-law to Margaret’s five sisters, three brothers and their families. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, and mother-in-law Mary Paterson.

“Duke” was a treasured friend, mentor and entrepreneur who could light up a room with his smile, laughter, and baby blues.

John delighted in telling stories about the band he began in high school with his closest friends, Sounds of Windsor. As lead guitarist and a vocalist, they covered Motown greats and rock and roll hits of the time. Margaret was not only his girlfriend but also a roadie, occasionally hauling gear for the band. Following marriage and college, he opened The Style Men’s Shop in Devonshire Mall, where he was the proud owner for 22 years serving well-dressed locals and even NHL players. During that time, he also owned the legendary Great Canadian T-Shirt Co, the destination for personalized and pop-culture apparel. He later worked for Naylor’s Kitchen and Bath for 29 years, where he established their bath showroom. He finally retired in July 2022.

John loved boating and travel with his family and friends, reaching destinations as far as Italy, Germany, Spain, and the Caribbean. Travel highlights included visits to see his daughters in Japan and Victoria. Back in the day, he was frequently on the water in the summer months, enjoying boat trips with his closest friends, and in the winters soaking up the rays (and occasionally golfing) with them in Florida. In Windsor, you could catch him cruising around town in his classic car du jour.

John was always the life of the party. Some of his most cherished moments were spent at home with his family hosting backyard BBQs and pool parties. While not a cook, you could never keep him out of the kitchen while Marg was baking or making a meal. Later in life he looked forward to Friday lunches with his treasured buddies, as well as challenging his grandson James to games of Connect 4 and Uno. John was beaming with pride seeing James singing on stage in his final weeks with us.

He will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff on the 8th floor at Windsor Regional Hospital – Ouellette Campus for their kind and compassionate service.

Memorial donations can be made to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer Society of Windsor and Essex County.

Memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2023, from 12-2 pm followed by a Celebration of Life at 2pm at Families First, 1065 Lauzon Rd, 519-969-5841
