Obituary for Laurier "Larry" McIntyre

Passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on March 8 Larry took his last breath with his wife and family by his side. He was nearly 95 years of age and will be remembered by his wife of 67 years Monique (Drapeau). Loving father to Deborah Uszynski (McIntyre) and father-in-law to Chris Uszynski. Cherished grandfather to Ethan and Madison Uszynski and older brother to Yvon McIntyre, Marjorie Levesque and Stella Paradis. Predeceased by his Father Wilfred McIntyre and Mother Marilda Goulette of New Brunswick.
He will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews, and cousins from New Brunswick, Montreal, Sudbury, Ottawa and Hamilton.
Larry (as we all called him) was a child of the great depression from Charlo NB. A son to a forest ranger and a doting big brother who had grown up in the great outdoors of the Gaspé Peninsula. When he could, Larry enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces where he was a corporal in The Queens Own Riffles of Canada 2nd Battalion in the Korean War (Feb 1952 – August 1955). Awarded with Distinction, he received the United Nations Service Medal from the Canadian Armed Forces as well as the “Ambassador for Peace” Medal by the Nation of Korea in 2005.
After the war Larry returned to Canada working in the mines of Timmins and then setting south to Windsor to work at Dominion Forge, where he retired before their closure in 1986.
Prior to joining the Canadian Armed Forces and leaving for Korea, Larry met and fell in love with a girl from Balmoral NB, one village over from his hometown of Charlo NB. Monique and Larry would correspond throughout his deployment during the war and reunite upon his return and marrying each other in August of 1956. Starting their new lives in Windsor ON, they later joined a large sprawling suburban development of South Windsor in 1959. The new St Martin DE Porres Church was built a couple blocks away where Larry became a lifelong usher, volunteering and helping serve at masses, putting up Christmas decorations, etc… until the church closed in 2007.
Larry and Monique had one daughter Deborah in 1967, he was always so proud of her. Instilling her with fatherly advice and sharing his passion for fishing and telling a good story. This also carried through to his role as loving Pepe to Ethan and Madison taking them fishing and going to the park. He loved his grandchildren very much and always wanted to keep up with them in their lives. He was such a hard worker, helping ‘his favourite’ son-in-law build a house and always wanted to do something when he came over to visit. He always wanted to contribute and make something in the spirit of moving forward and making this a better world.
Everyone who met Larry were left a better person in some way. He had this gift of meeting a total stranger and within minutes finding a common interest or person they knew. His passion for current events and history made him knowledgeable on any topic but his genuine kindness and laughter left you feeling like you have been friends forever.
The Family would like to extend a thank you to the amazing and caring staff at Seasons in Amherstburg where Larry has resided for 5 years. Thank you for the Staff of the 6th floor of Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette Campus, the VON, Paramed and Amy’s Helping Hand. Special thanks to Dr Tim O’Callahan.
The family will be having a private Veterans Service at Heavenly Rest Cemetery in April.
