Leonardo "Leo" Santamaria

Peacefully with his children by his side, Leo Santamaria, age 86, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2020. Leo is predeceased by his beloved wife Beatrice (2019) and survived by his devoted children Luci (Richard), Lori (Alec), Bart (Jennifer) and his grandchildren James, Lucas, Ty, Colin, Bella and Olivia. “Leo the Barber” as he was known, was born in 1933, in the town of Monte Sant’Angelo, Italy. Leo began working in a barbershop when he was 10. He came to Canada in 1951 and was blessed to meet the love of his life Beatrice and marry in 1958.

Leo opened South Windsor Barber Shop in 1967 and it became a fixture in the community until his retirement in 2010. Generations of families frequented the barber shop - a true testament to who Leo was as a person, not just a barber. He was an active member of the community and you could find him bowling on Thursday nights, spending time at the Knights of Columbus or cheering on the Windsor Spitfires with his friends as a proud season ticket holder. He and Beatrice loved to cheer on the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Blue Jays. Leo was quite the handy man, you could always find him fixing something in his garage.

Leo lived his life with integrity and set an example with his strong work ethic and commitment to helping others. Leo was beloved by so many wonderful family, friends and customers and will be greatly missed. We all take comfort now that he is reunited with Beatrice and his broken heart is now whole again.

A Celebration of Leo’s Life is planned for the spring of 2021, as circumstances allow.

A special thank you to the entire staff at Windsor Regional Hospital - Hotel Dieu Campus who provided wonderful care in his final weeks.

Lucy, Lori, and Bart,
We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Leo. We have had the pleasure of getting to know him for the past 3 years as he would frequent our store. We will miss him, and his words of wisdom. Sending prayers to your family during this difficult time.

Lucy, Lori and Bart: I was happy to have a lovely visit with your Dad on the day of celebration for Fran Sheehan. Lenore and I also got to visit with Lori for a few minutes that day. The Curry Avenue neighbourhood was blessed to have Leo and Beatrice in their midst for so many years. I have just finished watching his funeral many loving words for a very loving and gracious man. He and Beatrice will long be remembered.
