Obituary for Magnus Mitchell

Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 10th after a short illness (not CoVid). Loving father of Cheryl Mitchell (Wallace Lauzon) and Sheila Mitchell. Cherished grandfather of Katherine Mitchell. Caring brother of Sheila (Jim) Basham. Magnus was predeceased by Helen (2014) his wife of 66 years. Predeceased by his brothers Leonard and David, and his parents Magnus and Barbara (Bab). Magnus will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews in Scotland, Wales, Canada, and the United States, and by his dear friends Wes and Liz Smith.

Magnus was born in Kinghorn, Fife, a small holiday and fishing village on the east coast of Scotland. Apprenticed as a carpenter, he lived and worked in many parts of Britain building military installations during the war before deciding to set off on an adventure and move to Canada in 1947. He arrived in Windsor to stay temporarily with his Mitchell cousins, but met Helen after only two weeks. They married in 1949.

Magnus had a long career with Building Department of the Municipality of Windsor as a building inspector beginning in 1953 and becoming Building Commissioner (1976-1987). The 1970’s and 80’s were very busy ones for Magnus. He was an early member of the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA) serving as President from 1969-1972. He was president of the Canadian Building Officials Association and was very active for many years in the Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA) International, serving as president (1984-5). Helen was at his side for much of the travel that his appointments required, both making many friends along the way. Magnus was active in many charitable and community organizations in Windsor over the years including the Goodfellows, the Victorian Order of Nurses, and the Westend Health Centre.

With only one grandchild, Katie was the apple of her “Menka’s” eye. They spent many long hours playing on the front porch, and she has fond memories of going for walks, and singing in the car.
As per Magnus' wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to Canadian Alzheimers Society or to the Windsor Goodfellows.

Cremation services entrusted to Families First.
