We remember our mother’s garden—
the riotous beauty of lilies, marigolds, daisies, roses in every shade—
the smell of summer suffusing the whole yard,
gigantically glorious homemade bouquets that graced
our humble table and coloured our black-and-white world.
We remember our mother’s kitchen—
the smell of garlic and herbs simmering in sauce, infusing all with her spicy style:
roasted meats, fresh vegetables, homemade pasta, baked apple pies, S cookies—
the endless bounty of our table, rich and nourishing—the best food in the world.
We remember our mother’s creativity—
sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidering
beautiful dresses, comforting sweaters, colourful quilts, delicate scenes
decorating our lives with her gifts of love.
With profound reverence, we honour our mother’s spirit—
A cultured, refined artist with the heart of a tenacious warrior.
She loved entertaining, joking, telling stories, playing music,
reading books, watching classics.
Above all, she loved her children and grandchildren, sacrificing all for our wellbeing,
never missing an opportunity to brag, her hopes and dreams realized in us.
Our accomplishments—love, education, success—were hers.
We remember all she was, all she gave, all she did, and her nature comes into focus:
these priceless pieces of herself, vivid and varied, gather into a soulful masterpiece.
Whenever we see stained glass framed in lead,
sunlight streaming through after a storm, we will remember our mamma.
And when we stand together, parts of a whole, the hole will be filled.
Mamma, in our stories and in our hearts, you will live forever.
