Obituary for Paolo Panetta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving father, Nonno, brother and friend on March 6, 2021 at the age of 94 years. Cherished husband of the late Elena (2010, nee Varacalli) for 57 years. Loving father of Connie and Enzo Aquino, Domenic and Daniela Panetta, Rosa and David Pella. Adored Nonno of Michael (Nadia), Mark (Victoria), Matthew, Paul (Holly), Amanda (Matthew), Alaina, Daniel, Christopher, Julia and Bisnonno of Gemma and Vienna. Dear son of the late Domenico and Concetta Panetta. Beloved brother of Maria Cataldo (the late Salvatore), the late Giuseppina Zucco (the late Salvatore), the late Sarina Pelle (the late Ettore).Beloved brother-in-law of Paolo and Nina Varacalli, the late Teresa Zucco (the late Giuseppe), Giuseppe Varacalli (the late Carmela), Bruno Varacalli (Maria), the late Francesco Varacalli (the late Teresa), the late Michele Varacalli (the late Sandra), the late Maria Siciliano (Domenico). Paolo will be sadly missed by his many nieces, nephews and friends.

In 1954, Paolo and his new bride Elena left their hometown of Gerace, Italy, leaving behind his beloved sisters and parents to embark on a new adventure to Canada. Meeting up with Elena’s brothers, Frank and Paul, they became part of a loving Italian Community of friends centred around Erie St., in what is now known as Windsor’s Via Italia. His late wife Elena and him lived in the same house since 1959, always having amazing neighbours and being an integral part of the neighbourhood.

His family and friends were always the most important part of his life. He loved hunting with his friends and family and did so until the age of 92. His passion for gardening and his amazing green thumb was what he was best known for amongst his family and friends. He was always generous in sharing his harvest with all of those around him.

His biggest joy was to be with family and friends, sharing jokes, laughs, and stories over a home made glass of wine. His smile, great sense of humour, and outlook on life were contagious, making everyone feel welcomed in his presence. He was most proud of his grandchildren and was always reminding them how blessed he was to have a great family.

His thirst for knowledge was evident in his ability to converse on any topic. He also loved Italian music and would never miss the chance of dancing a tarantella. On his 90th birthday when asked his secret, “game meat, garden vegetables and 2 glasses of wine at dinner”.

Paolo worked at Chrysler Canada for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was a proud member of the CAW and still attended lunches when he could.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

A private family visitation and Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday March 13, 2021 at St. Angela Merici Church. A livestream link will be available on this webpage to view the Funeral Mass at 9:30 am. A private family entombment to follow at Heavenly Rest Cemetery. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Families First, South Windsor.
