Obituary for Phil Zakoor

Passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at the age of 84 surrounded by loved ones. Beloved husband of the late Dolores (nee Dugal) (2007). Cherished father of Terri and husband Jeff Mosher, Phil and wife Cindy (nee Gelinas), Virginia, Patti and husband Gerry Bezaire, Paul and wife Karen (nee Friesen) and Sarah and husband Brad Wilder. Loving Jiddi of Amanda, Philip, Stephanie, Kathleen-Rose, Kelly, Malorie, Emily, Erika, Jaquelyn, Julia, Robbie, and Matthew. Dear son of the late Joseph and Sarah Zakoor. Survived by his brother Bud (the late Eileen) and brother-in-law Moe Veldhuizen (the late Donna). Predeceased by his siblings Ursula, Eddie, Gord, Louise, Mary-Jane “Pinky”, Larry, Nina, Barbara-Ann and their spouses. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Phil retired from Brights Wine Ltd. in 1989. In the same year, he became the first CAE of Ontario Knights of Columbus State Office. Phil was tasked with transforming the records site to a fully functional communications office which included automation of the annual convention, and the first iteration of their online presence.

He was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 13335 St. Peter’s Maronite, and Fourth Degree member of the Dean Wagner Assembly. Phil was the former Supreme Director for Canada and also served in many other executive positions for the Knights of Columbus since joining the Order in 1957.

Phil was a passionate volunteer, serving his community on many boards throughout his life and well into retirement.

His greatest joy was family. Bonding with his children and grandchildren during special occasions and simple phone calls always brought him pleasure. His sense of humour and laughter will be greatly missed.

Phil was a long-term loyal but somewhat disappointed fan of the Detroit Lions and Toronto Maple Leafs. He never stopped cheering them on and was determined a miracle would happen in his lifetime, but alas it didn’t. His newfound loyalty to the Toronto Raptors was an unexpected and glorious success. Phil was a dedicated fan of the Detroit Tigers as well.
