Obituary for Suzanne Jacqueline Marie DeGuire

Suzanne DeGuire (nee Vachon) passed away peacefully with her family around her on December 23, 2022 at the age of 91. Suzanne was predeceased by her husband Henri, her mother Melodia, father Gaston, and her Brother Denis all from Quebec. Suzanne is survived by her three daughters and their spouses Ann and John Ducharme, Lise and Glen Mallott, Melodie and Dale Shantz. Meme Sue was an amazing and doting grandmother to her 12 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
At the age of 19, Sue moved to Toronto, Ontario to be a nanny and learn English. It was during this time she met her late husband, Henri "Homer" "Joe" DeGuire at a church dance. Henri and Sue eventually settled in Windsor and raised their 3 daughters. Mom was a fantastic homemaker but not a cook! She could make great spaghetti and stew but her favorite “cooking” was putting on potluck parties for her Beta Sigma Phi Sorority friends.

Sue enjoyed family, camping at Ivy Lea, playing piano, riding horses, traveling, knitting, crocheting, sewing, opera, classical and country music and books, lots of books! Not surprisingly, she particularly enjoyed her earlier work at the University of Windsor library. Her love of arts and culture has greatly influenced her life and family. Sue loved a good cup of tea, a good book, beautiful music and creating a lovely space to call home. We all loved visiting Mom/Meme’s cozy home filled with her books, hot tea and of course chocolate and fudge!

Sue was the champion knitter of "Fuzzies", warm, fuzzy socks that could magically keep your feet warm and toasty. Her “Fuzzies” are enjoyed by many friends and family across the globe, Toronto, Italy, Jordan, South Sudan, the Netherlands, and the United States. And when Sue’s eyesight started to weaken, she began knitting scarves and neck warmers, donating them to local mission organizations.

Traveling well into her 80's, Sue enjoyed trips with family that included an East Coast cruise where she was able to visit her lifelong friend Marguerite Paquette in her beloved Quebec City. She lived with family up until she moved to Harrowood Retirement Home. She spent the last part of her life enjoying her new found friends who filled her with joy and happiness.

Sue, Mom, Meme and Meme Sue, all affectionate names that we called her, will be very missed. We each treasure the sweet times we have had with our precious Mom and Meme and we will love and cherish her in our hearts and loving memories always.
