Obituary for William "Bill" John Dewar

It is with deep sadness but gratitude for a long, well lived life, that the family of Bill Dewar announces his peaceful passing. With family by his side, Bill was taken into God’s care on March 28, 2020 at the age of 96.
Dearly loved husband of high school sweetheart Rachel (Cornett) for 75 years. Dearest father of Brian (Kathie) Dewar and Diana Dewar (Les Fincham). Dearest Papa of Sarah Dewar (Mark Dutka), Lauren Dewar, Krystina Fincham and Sandra Fincham (Kyle Thomson). Big Papa to Luke, Hunter and Edwyn Pinnau and Avery, Maevis and Paige Thomson.
Predeceased by parents William and Margaret Dewar, Aunt Jenny and Uncle Harry Pearson, sisters Georgina (Bill Nickell), Jean (Len Russell), cousin Jim Pearson (Dorothy), sisters-in-law Lily Moore (Bud), Laura Chappell (Gord), brother-in-law Jim Cornett (Hettie) and lifelong friends Bill and Marg Waldron. Survived by brother-in-law Sam Cornett (Sharon) and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was a proud Canadian and served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 4 years during WW II, which included convoy duty on the Triangle Run in the North Atlantic. He continued to speak to attentive and inquisitive school groups about the importance of Remembrance Day well into his 90’s.
He was an active member of Trinity United and Tecumseh United Churches where he sang in the choirs, a volunteer with Windsor Goodfellows, and a member of the War Pensioners Association. He was a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Bill worked in the automotive industry for 40 years at Windsor Automotive where he always spoke fondly of his customers as friends.
Bill was happiest when he was cottaging and puttering at Old Woman’s River and Cameron Lake with Bill and Marg Waldron or at Big Crosby Lake with family. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and bowler. He loved watching hockey and was an optimistic Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He could fix anything and completed countless beautiful woodworking projects. He loved nature and was a wealth of knowledge about wildlife.
Bill’s highest priority and source of pride was Rachel and their family whom he loved and supported dearly. He will be remembered as a kind, affable and generous man who enjoyed happy times with his family and friends. He always saw the good in people. He will be sadly missed.
We would like to thank all of his caregivers, particularly the outstanding staff at Oak Park Terrace Windsor for their care and compassion. If you so desire, donations to Windsor Goodfellows or the Salvation Army would be appreciated by the family. At Bill’s request cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bill’s life will take place at a later date.
