Obituary for William Paul "Bill" Gibson

GIBSON, William Paul “Bill”, age 88, of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, passed away April 21, 2022. Bill is survived by his wife and dearest friend, Mary Gibson (nee Irinyi). Mary and Bill celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary in 2021.

Bill’s family includes: two step daughters Shelley (Raymond) Sanders, Kathryn (Gill) Baker and two stepsons Randal (Marie Anne) Sasso, and Eugene Sasso from Westlake, OH. Dear grandfather to Kurtis Sasso, Andrew Sasso (Angela) from Toronto, Charles (Heather) Sasso, Samantha (John Murdoch) MacDougall, John (Heidi) Sasso from Kelowna, BC, Natalie (Jordan) Ellis, Thomas Sasso (Matthew) from Guelph, ON, and Ruth Sasso from Cleveland, OH. Loving great grandfather to Peter and Veronica Sasso from Toronto, Marri and Lachlan MacDougall, Isabelle and Oliver Sasso, and Evelyn and Jack Sasso from Kelowna.

Predeceased by his parents, Harold and Elizabeth Gibson. He enjoyed the company of his much-loved sisters, Marie (d.) (Eugene (d.) Couvillon, Jean (Norman (d.) Pare, Gloria (Kenneth) Gilboe, and their families.

Bill worked in the Windsor office of the Canadian National Railway for 40 years, beginning in his late teens, as a bike-riding telegram delivery person. His openness to emerging technologies led to his suitability for teletyping, and then the computerized safe ordering of train cars as they crossed between Windsor and Detroit.

We honor Bill for his love of our mother and our family, his wit and humor, his keen eye and trained hand with mechanical and home repairs, his craft making, and other creative endeavours. Bill’s fondness for the outdoors included camping, sailing, travel, and trailering which he enthusiastically shared with his family and friends.

We express our sincere thanks to the many kind caregivers who attended to Bill, assisting him with loving care including: the Staff at Oak Park, LaSalle, and to Shelley and Ray for receiving Mom and Bill into their home, supporting and caring for them during the pandemic. There were many visits to their home from medical and support people attending to our parents which we are grateful for. The staff at Hotel Dieu-Grace Hospital - Palliative Care Unit cared for Bill in his final days. If you so desire, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Windsor-Essex County (ASWE).

There will be a celebration of Bill’s life where he will be honored in a private event.

A gentle, generous, funny, and kind man has passed. We mourn, and will dearly miss Bill.
