Obituary for Yvonne Ingrid Gibb

On March 3, 2023 the Lord called home His beloved daughter Yvonne Gibb after a year-long battle with brain cancer. She was the devoted wife of 7 years to John Veenstra, the beloved mother to Elizabeth Bouwma (Tim Reid), Stephanie (Dan) Prange, and Melanie Bouwma. Cherished grandmother to Nathaniel, Isabella, Isaiah, and Elijah Prange. She leaves behind her siblings, Cathy (Steve), Margaret, William (Diana), Sharon (Sid), and Barbara (Glenn), as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Although she fought hard to live she trusted in God’s plan and timing. She knew not only would she see her Heavenly Father, she would be reunited with her parents Wilma (2005) and John Schenk (2016), her niece Melanie de Steiger (2018), and her dear brother Kevin Schenk (2021).

Born to immigrant parents in Wyoming, Ont. Yvonne was the third of seven children. She spent her early years helping on the farm, working at her parent's store The Dutch Shoppe, and taking care of her youngest brother, Kevin, who was born with Downs Syndrome.

In 1990, as a single mom with 3 young children, Yvonne went to nursing school and graduated in 1993 with her RN diploma. For nearly 30 years she had devoted herself to caring deeply for her patients. She spent her career working in West Virginia and Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Yvonne was always busy and was not one to sit around. She spent her time with her husband, family and friends, traveling, volunteering, shopping, boating, and barbecuing on Peche Island. In her alone time she enjoyed her creative side. Over the years she had learned how to sew, cross stitch, scrapbook, knit, garden, and cook new dishes. She was also sure to carve out time in her busy schedule for her pride and joy, her grandchildren.

At a young age she learned to love Jesus and that love continued to grow stronger as she grew. It was through Him she found her strength as she weathered storms in life.

Yvonne’s love language was gift giving and she not only gave tangible gifts but gave of her time and love freely. To know Yvonne means to have received a gift or loving gesture from her. She leaves us with a legacy to strive to love all, choose joy, forgive, and give freely as Christ has taught us to.

“The sun will no longer be your light by day nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you for the Lord will be your Everlasting Light and your God will be your glory” Isaiah 60:19
