Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Years ago I was driving Barry and my sister Janet (Crew) over the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. I had not been driving long and Barry was an excellent passenger, calm and encouraging. He advised me to drive slowly and carefully. As we got to the middle of the bridge and looked down at the Clifton Gorge below Barry asked us how long ago the bridge had been built. We were not sure, but said that it had recently celebrated it's centenary. Barry loked horrified when he realised that all that stood between him and a huge drop was a bridge that was over a hundred years old. He told me in no uncertain terms to accelerate, until we got to the safety of the other side.

What we did not know then was that the chains that suspend the bridge were second hand, having previously been used on the old Hungerford Bridge in London. Had Barry realised that fact we might both have been accelerating.

Barry has been a wonderfully supportive friend to my family for over 50 years. There are so many happy memories of being with him and his family. Barry was a great ambassador for Canada when he visited Britain, as evidenced by all the people "over this side of the pond" who have grieved the loss of this lovely man.
