Eleanor Hyland

Died on December 30, 2009 after a severe fall, she was the beloved wife and partner of Donald for 58 years. Eleanor was born in Philadelphia on January 18, 1926 to Frank & Florence Williams. She was raised and educated in North Toronto. Her brother Bruce (Betty) predeceased her in 2000.

Eleanor's love for her family was very deep and she cared for her children with total devotion. She was very proud of their families and followed their activities with admiration. Her cherished family: Douglas Hyland (Wendy), Katherine Hyland (Gerry), David Hyland (1996), Margaret Franczuz (Steve), Gordon Hyland (Darlene), Patricia Winik (Joseph), Nancy Benyo (Steve). Grandchildren remembered are: Jennifer & Hannah Hyland, John and Justin Franczuz, Melissa, Christina and Matthew Hyland, Alexa, Juliana and Allison Winik and Eric and Sarah Benyo. Remembering also are Margaret Tucker (Gary, 1996) and Marion and Harold Kirk, sisters in law. Eleanor graduated from Victoria College, University of Toronto in 1949 with an Honors degree in Food Sciences. In June of 2008, she attended the 60th reunion of this class of 57 women in Toronto. She attended the Ontario College of Education in 1949 where she met Donald and they lived in Guelph briefly, before moving to Windsor in 1953. Eleanor was an active leader in her church – she loved her church dearly and was one of the original members of Glenwood United church. She was awarded a life membership award of the Canadian United Church Women and served in this organization in many capacities. She loved to sing hymns in her home with the family joining her in a song. The family has been active in athletics and all school activities respectfully at Glenwood, Massey and Universities. She attended many, many games all over Canada and the US and earned a fair reputation as a referee baiter. She also had a fond interest for the Pistons and the Maple Leafs. A loyal group of bridge players was an early recreation. She enjoyed the group greatly for many, many years. She was reported to be a "wild bidder". Eleanor loved to travel, the family dubbed her as "Princess" as she visited many parts of the world. She was proud to have dipped her toes in the Arctic (Alaska) and the Antarctic (Chile) and the Indian Ocean (New Zealand). Most pleasing was a visit to the family homestead in Patricia's Bay, Vancouver Island. Eleanor's legacy is a lovely, kindly, winning smile with passionate, support with the loyalty for her family. These attributes along with a deep Christian Conviction will carry her into Heaven. We will see you there Mom. A special thank-you to Dr. Jeff Price for his care over the years and to the staff of the I.C.U. Unit at Hotel Dieu Grace for their excellent care. Visitation Sunday 3-5pm & 7-9pm. Funeral Service Monday 1pm at Families First Funeral Home & Tribute Centre (519-969-5841) 3260 Dougall Ave. Dr. Don Hansford and Joseph Winik officiating. Interment to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
