Jean Mongenais

MONGENAIS, Jean

Peacefully and prayerfully on April 5, 2011, at 73 years of age.

Loving father of the late Pierre (1982), the late Michelle (1993), and Paul (Josée Lehoux). Proud and beloved Pépé of Catherine, Valérie, Jacob and Isabelle. Cherished and devoted brother of Hélène Bontront (Louis). Will be greatly missed by numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, godchildren Jean-Louis Bontront (Mary), Jean-Pierre Bisnaire (Michelle Lafleur), Carolyn Sylvestre (Paul), Claude Marier (Sue) and the late Jerry Marier, and by lifetime friend Jeanne Quenneville.

As a dedicated math teacher, Jean touched the lives of thousands of students and colleagues. He was a leader in the francophone community. He was the editor of Le Rempart for over 30 years. He worked within countless organizations, including: l'Association de la jeunesse francophone, l'Association de la presse francophone, le Comité organisateur de la Paroisse St-Jérôme, l'Association de langue française de l'Ontario, la Clinique juridique bilingue, le Comité du tricentenaire, the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee, Harmony in Action, and Birthright of Windsor, to name a few. He played a crucial role in the creation of L'Essor High School. As a long-time President of the Windsor Advisory Committee on Disability Issues, he helped shepherd accessibility reforms that are now taken for granted. He privately mentored a host of students and offered companionship to many families of disabled children. The exceptional care and love he provided, with his wife Jeanne, to his own disabled children, ensuring they enjoyed active, joyful and fruitful lives, was exemplary.

He was an author, pianist, mediator, and recipient of various honorary distinctions.

In retirement, he worked as an accredited court translator, consultant, and supply teacher. He obtained a Bachelor of Laws. Jean was a devout Christian and his strong faith and deep love of God glowed in his daily life. He lived his last difficult weeks as he did his whole life, with faith, strength, and his characteristic good humor. The family will honour Jean with projects related to his faith, mathematics and the disabled. Donations may be made to Paul's law firm, Perras Mongenais in trust. The family would like to express deep appreciation to Dr. Ciarán Sheehan and the dedicated nurses at Malden Park for their compassionate care, and to Father Daniel Morand, Jean's pastor and dear friend. Visitation Saturday 3:30-5:30 and 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Sunday 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Families First 1065 Lauzon Rd. East Windsor 519-969-5841. On Monday, family and friends are invited to Paroisse St-Jérôme 3739 Ypres after 9:30 a.m. for Mass at 10 a.m. Interment at Heavenly Rest Cemetery.
