When we were young

Debbie and I met when she and her family had returned to live in Windsor- we were young teenagers, doing the things young foolish teenagers did.

My first experience meeting Roy was an opportunity of learning both respect and admiration. I had never met a "blind person" before. (I place blind person in quotes as Roy was never blind to our chinanigans)

Deb and I were cleaning the house, on St. Patrick's, as a favour to Joy as she worked long hours. I recall her being very serious about us not moving things. I did not understand at the time that it was important so that her Dad, Roy, would not trip over anything that was misplaced or moved. This was one of many lessons in respect for those who are not sighted.

On several occasions, I was invited for dinner. On one such occasion I was in awe of Roy's ability to make the salad for dinner. I had never thought that giving a blind person a sharp knife, cutting board, and vegetables to cut was a good idea but again, I learned yet another lesson in life- respect and admiration. I stood in awe watching Roy make a beautiful salad with tomato and cucumber cut in very even and precise sizes. He made short work of the carrots and potatoes and was able to do so many things that my young sterotyped mind did not think possible. Roy helped others understand- he was loved and will be greatly missed by all.

Thoughts and Prayers to the Lesperance family and all friends.
